In Anne Mahlum’s Creative Mornings talk, she speaks about not only the fear of taking risks, but the fear of how others respond to our decisions. Mahlum stepped down as the founding CEO of an organization that uses running to help homeless individuals change their lives so she could start a high-end fitness boutique. Not only was this a difficult emotional decision, but she had to deal with negative reactions:
“Oh, good luck with that.” You know, that was the response. I could feel the disappointment in people of their expectations of me and who I was to them and what I was suppose to do with my life. I would find myself saying, “I’m still going to be heavily involved with Back on My Feet, I’m still the founder, I’ll still be doing all kinds of things and fundraising and helping out and staying really involved.” And I felt like they needed me to say that to them.
Mahlum understands that we have to make decisions for ourselves and cannot lead the life other’s see for us. This may mean quitting your secure corporate job to pursue a low paying dream or giving up on a side project that was never really working. When we constantly worry about what others think, our life stalls. As Mahlum discovered, “no one else gets to decide my life and what it is that I’m going to do.”
