To Get Inspired, Get Uncomfortable

Equinox president Sarah Robb O’Hagan knows that when things get too easy and boredom sets in, you aren’t doing anyone, or yourself, any favors. In an interview with The Muse , she explains that this is the perfect opportunity to expand your mind by doing something new and getting uncomfortable:

One of my favorite sayings is break yourself to make yourself. When you’re someone like me, who’s stumbled along and failed a lot, you kind of push yourself out of your comfort zone and break yourself a little bit so that you push through to the next level of growth. It’s kind of like what we ask ourselves to do in the gym. How do you push your body to the next level? You get uncomfortable.

Our mind works in the same way as our body. If you get too comfortable with a routine, it will become stagnant, even if it involves going to the gym. To create new ideas, you need to change things up so your mind stays attentive and alert to new possibilities. So partake in a new experience by walking a different way home from work, reading a book you wouldn’t normally pick up, or anything to jolt you out of your normal routine. O’Hagan reminds us that “if you’re not getting more experience that you’re going to use later on, it’s going to catch up with you later.”
